The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square has one of the largest collections of ancient Egyptian art in the world. With a guide you focus on the highlights, from Old Kingdom statues to the royal gold of later kings, in about two hours.
At Giza you see the three great pyramids, drive to the panoramic viewpoint for the classic photo, and walk down to the Sphinx through the Valley Temple of Khafre. Going inside the Great Pyramid is an extra ticket bought at the gate.
By road, Cairo is about six to seven hours from Sharm El Sheikh each way, which leaves little time for the sights in one day. The plane turns that into one hour, so you spend the day at the museum and the pyramids instead of on the bus.
