Cairo is a huge city, and with only a few days the hard part is choosing. This break covers the sights most visitors come for, in an order that keeps the driving short. Here is what each day looks like and how to prepare.
Few cities hold so much history so close together: the last standing wonder of the ancient world, the first pyramid ever built, one of the greatest museums of Egyptian art, some of the oldest churches in the world and a medieval Islamic city that is still lived in. Three nights is enough to see the highlights without rushing, with time to sit in a café in the evening.
The second day starts at the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx, then continues south to Sakkara and the Step Pyramid of Djoser, built about a century before the Great Pyramid. In the evening a dinner cruise on the Nile shows the city lit up from the water, with music and a folklore show on board.
The third day begins at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, then moves to Coptic Cairo, where the Hanging Church stands above the gate of a Roman fortress. From there you drive up to the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, with views across the city, and end the day in the lanes of Khan El Khalili.

From October to April the weather is mild and ideal for sightseeing. Summer days are hot, so we start early and keep the museum for the hottest hours. Fridays are busier at the sites, and many shops in Khan El Khalili open later on Friday mornings.
